The Clinton Vision - Chomsky : GlobalExchange : US$10.00Noam Chomsky Bill Clinton assumed the Presidency of the United States heralded as a New Democrat. He would do things differently. He wouldn't kowtow to powerful lobbies. He would break the bureaucratic gridlock. After a year in office - a Clinton vision has taken shape. Its lenses and frames suggest that it's business as usual in Washington. President Clinton has fervently embraced and promoted programs and policies such as NAFTA and GATT that will exacerbate social and economic polarization in the US and abroad. (audio cassette - 60 minutes - 1993) Noam Chomsky is one of the foremost intellectual figures of this era. A renowned professor at MIT for more than four decades - he has been honored with numerous awards and degrees. He was one of the first to speak out against the Vietnam War and is known the world over for his trenchant critiques of U.S. foreign policy and the media. For many he is a symbol of resistance to tyranny and the depredations of private and state power. Few people are more astute in decoding the realities of globalization. He was named in by Utne Reader as one of the top 100 visionaries in the world. Utne says - ''Chomsky knows who's powerful - who's abusing their power - and what they and we should do about it. Over the years he's managed to provoke left and right through his relentless critiques of US foreign policy and culture.'' The New Statesman calls him - ''the conscience of the American people.'' Rolling Stone magazine says - ''Chomsky has been unrelenting in his attacks on the American hierarchy ... he is up there with Thoreau and Emerson in the literature of rebellion.'' A recent survey ranked Professor Chomsky as the most cited living author. He is in such demand as a public speaker that he is booked years in advance - and everywhere he goes he draws overflow audiences. He is the author of scores of books - including Class Warfare - Powers and Prospects - The Common Good - The New Military Humanism and Propaganda and the Public Mind. US Human Rights Policy: Rhetoric and Practice - Chomsky : GlobalExchange : US$10.00Noam Chomsky December 10 - 1998 marked the 50th anniversary of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is the seminal human rights document. The US stresses human rights in its foreign policy; however - its application is selective. Abuses in - say - Saudi Arabia - are ignored - while those in Cuba are the focus of much attention. In October 1997 - Amnesty International issued a report charging the US criminal justice system with a persistent and widespread pattern of human rights violations. (audio cassette - 60 minutes - 1998) Noam Chomsky is one of the foremost intellectual figures of this era. Doing Democracy: The MAP Model for Organizing Social Movements : GlobalExchange : US$16.95by Bill Moyer with JoAnn McAllister - Mary Lou Finley and Steven Soifer contributions by Nancy Gregory and Juliette Beck Citizen activism has achieved many positive results. But the road to success for social movements is often complex - usually lasting many years - with few guides for evaluating the precise stage of a movement's evolution to determine the best way forward. One week the news will be alive with stories of thousands of people in the streets; the next week - the thousands are gone. But has the movement withered and died ? or has it just changed shape? Through understanding and analyzing social movements - Doing Democracy shows that the apparent ups and downs of a movement generally follow a pattern - which can be used to plan and carry out social action that is even more effective. Beginning with an overview of social movement theory and the MAP (Movement Action Plan) model - Doing Democracy outlines the eight typical stages of social movements - the four roles of activists - and case studies from the civil rights - anti-nuclear energy - Central America - gay/lesbian - women's health (breast cancer) - and globalization movements. Doing Democracy will appeal to social movement activists and organizations working on all issues - as well as to academics in a variety of disciplines ranging from political science - sociology - and peace studies - through women studies and the various courses in social work schools. Accessibly written - it will also be of interest to all those interested in better understanding the social movements they hear about in the daily media. (227 pages - 2001) Bill Moyer has spent more than 40 years as a full-time theorist - writer - organizer - consultant - educator and participant in social movements focused on a wide-variety of issues on three continents. The originator of the MAP Model - Moyer has given training courses and workshops to over 20 - 000 people. JoAnn McAllister is a social action researcher and consultant to community-based organizations - who has been active in social movements for 25 years. Mary Lou Finley is a sociologist at Antioch University in Seattle - and a long-time activist. Steven Soifer has been involved in local - national and international social movements and teaches at the University of Maryland - Baltimore. Nancy Gregory is a former student of Steven Soifer. This is a revised vesion of a paper she wrote while a student in Soifer's Social Work and Social Action Class. Juliette Beck is the coordinator of the Global Democracy Project for Global Exchange where she focuses especially on the international movement against corporate globalization of the political economic system. |

Beneath the ground - its energy is stored in vast reserves of coal - oil and gas. These fossil fuels were the driving forces of the industrial revolution. But as we race to extract and burn - it is increasingly accepted that greenhouse gases are causing irreversible damage to our planet. Global warming has the potential to render whole countries uninhabitable as glaciers melt and oceans rise. It is those who are energy-poor who are most at risk from this environmental damage. Two billion people live without a connection to the grid. Often they live in polluted areas using unsafe and unclean energy. In an era of Enron & Worldcom can we leave business to police itself? How much extravagant consumption can the planet sustain? Finally - how far have we come since Rio de Janeiro ?? were our commitments to protect the planet no more than hot air? Globalization: The New Face of Capitalism - Chomsky : GlobalExchange : US$10.00Noam Chomsky Globalization is hailed by the pundits as an irresistible natural force. It's like gravity - they say. Just accept it and go on with your life. A contrary view says this international economic order is nothing more than old wine in a new bottle. Powerful transnational institutions like the World Trade Organization - the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank are the main instruments and implementors of globalization. Nations and communities trying to maintain sovereignty - protect human rights and preserve the environment are under attack as they confront the latest version of capitalism. The Greening of Cuba : GlobalExchange : US$30.00The Greening of Cuba profiles Cuban farmers and scientists working to reinvent a sustainable agriculture - based on ecological principles and local knowledge rather than imported agricultural inputs. In their quest for self sufficiency - Cubans combine time-tested traditional methods with cutting edge bio-technology. When trade relations with the socialist bloc collapsed in 1990 - Cuba lost 80 percent of its pesticide and fertilizer imports and half its petroleum--the mainstays of its highly industrialized agriculture. Challenged with growing food for 11 million in the face of the continuing US embargo - Cuba embarked on the largest conversion to organic farming ever attempted. Told in the voices of the women and men--the campesino - researchers - and organic gardeners--who are leading the organic agriculture movement - The Greening of Cuba reminds us that developed and developing nations alike can choose a healthier environment and still feed their people. US Policy in Latin America - Birns : GlobalExchange : US$10.00Larry Birns Henry Stimson once referred to Latin America as our little region over here which has never bothered anybody. He wasn't kidding. The influence of the United States in Latin America is overwhelming - much more so than in the rest of the world. Obvious consequences flow from that. Under the umbrella of the Monroe Doctrine - the US has invaded Mexico - Grenada - Panama and the Dominican Republic. It supported coups in Guatemala - Chile and Brazil. It has financed wars and sabotage in Nicaragua and Cuba. From the Rio Grande to Tierra del Fuego - the colossus of the North dominates the South. Latin America's function is to provide raw materials - cheap labor and markets. Independent development is not tolerated. The recently-concluded NAFTA and GATT will accelerate the region's deteriorating conditions. (audio cassette - 60 minutes - 1993) Larry Birns is the Director of the Council on Hemispheric Affairs in Washington - DC. He is the editor of that organization's bi-weekly publication - The Washington Report on the Hemisphere. He is a frequent guest on national and international news programs. His articles regularly appear in leading newspapers - journals and magazines. |

The Global Activist's Manual: Local Ways to Change the World : GlobalExchange : US$15.95Edited by Mike Prokosch and Laura Raymond Introduction by Naomi Klein The Global Activist's Manual is a guide to transforming the corporate globalization movement. Three dozen authors look beyond the spectacular shutdowns and protests to introduce the reader to farmers in Iowa - industrial workers in Tennessee - and anti-sweatshop activists in Maine who are connecting global injustices to the issues in their own front yards. The authors range from movement ''stars'' to the unsung heroes who are challenging the world's largest corporations. This is a refreshing antidote to naysayers in the mainstream media who say there is no alternative to the current system. Activists will find practical organizing ideas supplemented by a how-to section on effective media work - fundraising - and organizing. Students and teachers can use these case studies as material for classroom analysis. Case studies describe how global and local activists have joined forces and ''localized globalization'' while working for labor rights - immigrant rights - and the environment. The book ends with a ''Movement Yellow Pages'' linking the many causes in the globalization movement. (324 pages - 2002) Mike Prokosch is the Global Coordinator for United for a Fair Economy and creator of UFE's Globalization for Beginners workshop - which he has led for thousands of people all over the US. Laura Raymond works on prison reform in northern California. Got the globalization blues? Read this savvy guide to global activism and read it today. It could change your life and - believe it or not - help you make history. ? Charles Derber - author of Corporation Nation |

The World Bank & IMF: 50 Years is Enough - Kennedy : GlobalExchange : US$10.00Danny Kennedy The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund together have more power to influence development in the Third World than do any other institutions on the planet. For the last fifty years - tens of billions of dollars have been loaned to the poorest nations with the ostensible purpose of improving their quality of life. The net result - in most cases - has been disastrous. World Bank and IMF practices often usurp local development priorities. Staggering levels of debt burden countries already poor. The gulf between the privileged few and those clinging to survival has widened. World Bank projects and IMF-imposed structural adjustment programs displace millions of people and devastate the environment. (audio cassette - 60 minutes - 1994) Danny Kennedy became an environmental activist in his native Australia at the age of twelve when he participated in a movement that stopped the construction of a large dam. He is a founder of Project Underground - the Berkeley-based organization that works with indigenous communities threatened by the mining and oil industries. He is a producer for Australian Public Radio and a member of the Action for Solidarity and Equality in Environment and Development. |

The WTO: Five Years of Reasons to Resist Corporate Globalization : GlobalExchange : US$5.95By Lori Wallach - Michelle Sforza Introduction by Ralph Nader Why is a global movement growing against the WTO? When you cut through the corporate propaganda about the benefits of globalization and really look at the 5-year track record of the WTO what you'll find is a slow motion coup d'etat - a low intensity war waged to redefine free society-democracy and its non-commercial health - safety and other protections-as subordinate to the dictates of big business. In the US - if we do not make the connection between our local problems and the corporate drive for economic and political control - then others will be blamed for these unavoidable and increasing problems. It's the immigrants! It's the welfare system! It's greedy farmers or workers! It's the regulatory agencies! Allowing such camouflage of the real causes of our problems means massive diversion of our focus - dividing people against each other to the further benefit of mega-corporations. Thus - what we face now is a race against time: How can citizens most effectively mobilize a reversal of the expanding corporatized globalization agenda while we defend our democratic spaces - instincts and institutions from further assault? Step one: read this pamphlet and pass it on. -Ralph Nader (80 pages - 1999) For more information - visit Global Exchange's WTO campaign. |

The Case Against War With Iraq - Zunes : GlobalExchange : US$10.00Stephen Zunes Addressing troops at Ft. Hood - Texas - President Bush warned - The Iraqi regime is a grave threat to the United States. The drums of war are beating loudly for an attack on Iraq. The reserves have been called up. Carrier battle groups are in place. The US is anticipating an 18-month occupation that will involve a heavy American military presence and a quick takeover of Iraqi oil fields. Beyond the rhetoric and gunship diplomacy - Bush has not made the case that a major invasion of Iraq is necessary. Historian and longtime peace activist Howard Zinn says - A war against Iraq has no logical connection to the tragic events of 9/11. We have a right to wonder if the motive for war is not stopping terrorism but expanding US power and controlling Mideast oil. (audio cassette - 60 minutes - 2002) Stephen Zunes is a specialist on the Middle East. His articles appear in leading journals and magazines. He teaches at the University of San Francisco and is director of its Peace & Justice Studies Program. He also chairs the Middle East Task Force for the interfaith Fellowship of Reconciliation. |

Noam Chomsky: 9-11 : GlobalExchange : US$8.95In 9-11 Noam Chomsky examines the root causes of the September 11th catastrophe - the historical precedents for it - and the possible outcomes as the world moves forward into the post-September 11 reality. For Chomsky - the atrocities of 9-11 ''are something quite new in world affairs - '' marking the first time since 1812 that the US mainland was attacked (an important distinction from Pearl Harbor - which was US territory - but effectively a colony). As Chomsky writes - ''in the past half century particularly - [the US] resorted to force throughout much of the world? For the first time - the guns have been directed the other way. That is a dramatic change.'' Chomsky believes that the attacks have been harmful in ways that extend far beyond the initial death toll and ongoing national emergency. For example - he believes they represent ''a devastating blow'' to Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. Most importantly and provocatively - Chomsky argues that in the world after 9-11 - it is no longer possible to hold our enemies to one standard - ourselves to another. Chomsky argues for an international rule of law; existing bodies such as the UN and World Court must be given credence and then relied upon. ''React with extreme violence - '' he writes - ''and expect to escalate the cycle of violence - leading to still further atrocities such as the one that is inciting the call for revenge.'' But if the goal is to reduce the probability of further atrocities - then rather follow lawful procedure - presenting the evidence and letting independent world bodies direct the appropriate response. As for why the attack happened - Chomsky writes that ''this question is rarely raised in a serious way.'' And he adds - ''To refuse to face this question is to choose to increase significantly the probability of further crimes of this kind.'' In 9-11 - Noam Chomsky's comments on the September 11th attacks - the new war on terrorism - Osama bin Laden - US involvement with Afghanistan - media control - and the long-term implications of America's military attacks abroad. Informed by his deep understanding of the gravity of these issues and the global stakes - 9-11 demonstrates Chomsky's impeccable knowledge of US foreign policy in the Middle East and South Asia - and sheds light on the rapidly shifting balance of world power. Speaking out against escalating violence - Chomsky critically examines the United States' own foreign policy record and considers what international institutions might be employed against underground networks and national states accused of terrorism. Noam Chomsky is a world renowned political activist - writer - and professor of linguistics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology - where he has taught since 1955. Chomsky has written and lectured widely on linguistics - philosophy - and politics. Among his works are: Powers and Prospects; World Orders - Old and New; Deterring Democracy; Manufacturing Consent (with ES Herman); Year 501: The Conquest Continues; Profit Over People; The New Military Humanism; Rogue States; and A New Generation Draws the Line. Chomsky's efforts for greater democracy are celebrated by peace and social justice movements worldwide. Simultaneous publication in Australia - Brazil - France - Germany - Greece - Holland - India - Italy - Japan - Korea - Norway - Portugal - Russia - Sweden - South Africa - Spain - Taiwan - and Turkey. After months of relentless news about terrorism - anthrax - war and the hunt for Osama bin Laden - our national conversation has taken a dramatic shift. Reflection has superceded our initial grief and anger - as we try to understand how the nightmare of 9/11 will affect us - our loved ones and our country in the long term. To capture the cutting edge of that conversation - AlterNet has released After 9/11: Solutions for a Saner World. The well-rounded collection of 42 articles untangles the knot of our new post-9/11 landscape - tackling every subject from civil liberties to Islamic fundamentalism to economics to sex. ''After 9/11 answers the once-unanswerable questions and envisions a once-unimaginable future - '' says AlterNet's executive editor Don Hazen. ''Its essays provide the context people need to understand how the terrorist attacks have changed their individual lives and what every one of us can do to prevent future attacks.'' Some of the essays are controversial - like Tamim Ansary's ''The Taliban -- An Afghan American Speaks - '' which sparked a national debate culminating in the New York Times Magazine. Others are inspirational - like Bill Moyer's patriotic call to re-mobilize America's citizenry. Eleven of the essays were written exclusively for the book - to update the national consciousness since the first few months after the attacks. The others were carefully selected from the thousands of articles featured on AlterNet in the months after the terrorist attacks. An American Addiction: Drugs - Guerillas - Counterinsurgency - US Intervention In Colombia - Chomsky : GlobalExchange : US$13.98Noam Chomsky Colombia has been the leading recipient of US arms and training in the Western Hemisphere through the 1990s. It has also had the worst human rights record by far in the Western Hemisphere during these years. That correlation is one of the best correlations in contemporary history.... It's a very important correlation that should be known and understood by the people who are paying for it. That?s us. And it will get worse. [Noam Chomsky - from the CD] Clinton's last act as President was to authorize $1.7 billion in military aid to Colombia. Bush has already added almost another billion dollars. In a clear - concise - and sometimes bitterly funny lecture - Noam Chomsky shows us who is getting the money - who is producing and exporting the drugs - and what the war on the ground is really about. ''There's an official story having to do with the so-called Drug War. That's not taken seriously by any competent analyst....The Drug Enforcement Agency issued a major report about a year ago in which they pointed out that at every level of the Colombian government there?s direct and extensive involvement in narcotrafficking. That includes the military. That includes the paramilitaries. In fact - the paramilitaries have announced publicly that 70% of their funding comes from narcotrafficking. That's where the antidrug money is going.'' ''If you make it impossible for peasants to survive - and when they produce the only thing they can produce to feed their children - and then you go after them with biological and chemical weapons and gunships - they?re going to do deeper into the Amazon - cross the border in Ecuador and grow more drugs. The narcotraffickers and the military will gain. That's more or less the same people. The small number of landowners who have taken over most of the wealth of the country are going to gain.....That?s the result of the Colombia plan.''
