Background
Corporate governance has now become a global agenda due to the Asian crisis in 1997-98 and the U.S. corporate scandals in 2001-02. In recent years, it has received and kept the interest not only of the direct stakeholders in corporations, but also from academics and policy makers. Mr James Wolfensohn, President of the World Bank, has remarked that proper governance of the corporations is now as important in the world economy as the proper governing of countries. It is increasingly becoming evident that countries and companies that can provide a stable and transparent investment climate stand the best chance of attracting investment and ensuring success in the long run. The governance structure of firms is shaped by the regulatory authorities, which may either regulate the corporations directly or indirectly influence them through its regulatory power over the stakeholders.

The implementation of sound corporate governance practice creates safeguards against corruption and mismanagement, while encouraging transparency, open management, equal access to information, and protection of minority shareholders' rights. Experience and research have shown that corporate governance can contribute to the long-term survival and growth of organizations by ensuring more effective and transparent management of the organization’s financial resources. The importance of corporate governance for sustained productivity growth in the developing world has been well demonstrated by research studies conducted by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
This one-day seminar on “Emerging Corporate Governance Practices” represents a unique opportunity to identify best practices and promote responsible corporate governance.

Seminar Objectives

The main objective of this workshop is to enhance awareness and discuss best practices in creating and maintaining an effective corporate governance system. The seminar would also draw parallels from other countries and evolve a comparative analysis of best practice. The seminar would also deliberate on the role of the Government in shaping the legal and regulatory framework, which would facilitate in protecting the capital providers and also safeguard consumers.
